Presentation of the OFREMI criticality assessment methodology applied to titanium

Abstract

The criticality factsheet is a comprehensive summary of the key figures for a substance, covering everything from its market to the industrial players directly involved. It identifies the vulnerabilities of a raw material and characterises the major risks in terms of lack of supply, vulnerability for the economy and ability to cope with hazards. OFREMI has developed its own methodology for assessing this criticality, based on the analysis of multi-parametric data relating to mining and metallurgical production, trade in these materials between France and the rest of the world, the strategic importance of the uses of these materials for France and Europe, their capacity to be recycled and substituted, and the geopolitical dimensions relating to producing, refining and consuming countries. We propose to present this methodology using the example of the assessment of the criticality of titanium metal.
