Abstract

Design is a discipline that offers a wide range of fields of application: product design, graphic design, packaging design, environmental design, digital design… and more recently, even culinary design. The diversity of its definitions and the multiplicity of its theoretical frameworks also reflect its dynamism and interdisciplinary nature. In the context of global markets shaped by strong international trends and versatile consumers, design can serve as a valuable tool and a new strategic way of thinking about the objects—real or virtual—that surround us. The aim of this chapter is to explain how design may provide a renewed framework for design management. The central and innovative question is whether "innovation guided by design" should be viewed as a powerful instrument of globalization or as a means of fostering culturally embedded and context-sensitive design.
