Abstract

The scientific literature on doctoral studies primarily focuses on the challenges faced by doctoral students (stress, sleep disorders, mental health issues), while few studies explore their positive experiences. In response to the PROJECTICs 2025 conference call on higher education transformations, this study examines the determinants of a positive doctoral experience using an auto-ethnographic approach. The study identifies five major determinants: entering doctoral studies and professional identity transition; a sense of research progression supported by a positive perception of the process; effective and supportive thesis supervision; successful socialization within the academic community; and maintaining a balance between academic and personal life. The analysis also highlights how innovative pedagogical engineering—such as hybrid training, international mobility, collaboration in international projects, thesis-by-article formats—combined with a proactive approach to career management, can enhance the doctoral experience, and thereby contribute to advancing research in management sciences.
