Abstract

The identity and offers of manufacturing companies are modified by digital transformation. These companies start building innovative offerings named Smart Product-Service Systems (Smart PSS) that rely heavily on digital services to create value for the customer: the role of the product in the value creation becomes secondary. Meanwhile, we are witnessing the development of new products that are specifically designed to distribute these digital services: it is a productization process. This qualitative study aims to provide a better understanding of the links between the digital transformation of manufacturing companies and the productization phenomenon. We use two cases of incumbent global manufacturing companies that are engaged in a productization process. Our results allow to identify the drivers that encourage the companies to productize their digital services. They provide an opportunity to explore the concept of productization with an IT approach, which has not been adequately investigated in the literature.
