Abstract

For nearly a decade, digital economics has held an increasingly prominent place in the Revue d'économie industrielle, reflecting the rise of a research field that has progressively established its autonomy from industrial economics. Digital economics does not merely revisit the classical questions of industrial economics; it pushes its boundaries by examining the role of digital platforms and big data, the effects of artificial intelligence, and related regulatory issues. In this article, we look back at the various precursor currents of digital economics (economics of information and knowledge, economics of networks) before presenting the key developments shaping digital economics and its positioning within and at the frontiers of industrial economics.
