Abstract

Résumé De manière générale, les personnes handicapées mentales manquent cruellement d'amis. Pourtant l'amitié, comme l'enseignait déjà Aristote, est constitutive de la vie bonne. L'article défend la thèse que l'exclusion commune des personnes mentalement déficientes des réseaux d'amis tient à une compréhension de l'amitié en termes de réciprocité. Il explore une conception alternative de l'amitié en termes de don et de mutualité, telle qu'elle est développée par des théologiens qui ont vu dans la question du handicap un enjeu théologique majeur. Il en tire aussi les conséquences sur le plan politique : pour que des liens d'amitié puissent se nouer entre handicapés mentaux et ceux qui ne le sont pas, il convient de favoriser l'émergence de lieux de rencontre, de lieux hospitaliers.
