Unlocking artificial intelligence for all: Navigating the complexities of the artificial intelligence digital divide

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping various industries and has the potential to revolutionize the way we live, work, and interact with the world around us. However, the recent advent and integration of AI technology also brings to light the digital divide (DD) that exists in our society. This divide is not seen only in access to AI (and other advanced technologies) but also encompasses the ability to understand, utilize, and benefit from these emerging technologies. This chapter explores the challenges of AI adoption in the context of this divide, focusing on the social, demographic, and technological factors that influence equitable access to AI. It highlights the disparities in AI adoption across sectors such as healthcare, e-government, and education, where demographic variables like age, education, and digital literacy play crucial roles in widening or narrowing the gap. By examining the barriers to AI adoption—such as digital literacy deficits, trust issues, and fears related to privacy and job security—this chapter underscores the complexity of bridging the AI-driven DD. Through a narrative review of key studies, this chapter provides insights for future research and policy development aimed at reducing the growing inequalities linked to AI.
