Abstract

Agricultural policies have always been the subject of theoretical and political controversies. Their history alternates between periods in which interventionism in agricultural markets is considered legitimate and periods marked by the withdrawal of the state from these markets. This collective volume, edited by Vincent Chatellier, Martin Pidoux, Thierry Pouch, and Marine Raffray, brings together nearly fifty authors. Comprising two volumes totaling 1,230 pages, the work includes 35 chapters organized into the following five parts: the foundations of agricultural policies; breaks and continuities in agricultural policies; new challenges; agricultural policies and international relations; and comparative perspectives on selected experiences around the world. The book seeks to account for the agricultural policies adopted and their transformations within the European Union and in many other countries worldwide: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Cuba, the United States, Haiti, India, Japan, the Maghreb, New Zealand, Russia, and Switzerland. In a global context where agricultural issues and food sovereignty have once again become pressing concerns, it was necessary to revisit what an agricultural policy is, the conditions under which it is formed, its theoretical foundations, and its fundamental operating principles.
