Abstract

The Moroccan economy has chosen to insert itself into global production networks. The results of this strategy are in some ways positive: in less than seven years after the start of automobile production, Morocco has become the leading producer of passenger cars in Africa. On the other hand, the examination of other indicators shows that the specialization of the Moroccan economy is confined to tasks with low added value, and that the degree of integration of the Moroccan economy into the automotive value chain remains insufficient to induce an acceleration of growth. As for the impact of the crisis induced by COVID-19, we must recognize the negative consequences of the pandemic on the Moroccan economy in the short term, but the crisis can be a game-changer in terms of relocation and redeployment of industries from Asian countries to Morocco, and can therefore constitute an opportunity to consolidate the results of the Moroccan automotive sector.
