Abstract

The digitization of the economy through innovation in digital platforms has contributed significantly to the current transition of the global economy. In this context, the Airbnb platform, currently the leader in short-term rentals, has had a real impact on local and regional economies and is creating problems for local policymakers, who are still unable to regulate this platform in order to achieve economic balance. However, research linking the effects of this platform to the education sector, such as international students, who are users and also indirect victims of this platform, is rare in the world of scientific research. Thus, through empirical analysis using the Poisson model with combined fixed effects on panel data and on certain French universities, we measure the effect of Airbnb listings and prices on the number of foreign students enrolling in these different universities. Our results show that Airbnb prices have no effect on these students. However, a 1% variation in the number of Airbnb listings leads to an average decrease of 34 foreign student enrollments in these universities. This exploratory work initially contributes to scientific research by clarifying the effect of this platform on foreign students who take several economic parameters into account when choosing their destination universities. Secondly, it expands the scope of Airbnb's impact on the education sector, which has rarely been studied.
