Management tools as objectified narratives of management work. A methodological proposal and case study

Abstract

This chapter proposes to approach management tools as an objectified narrative of management work. Far from being a simple technical instrument, it is envisaged as a text conveying social thought, condensing norms, values, and representations. In line with work on constitutive organizational communication (COC), the author suggests that tools also contribute to organizational narration. The study of the forward-looking management of jobs and skills (GPEC) model illustrates this approach: the system is interpreted as a narrative structured according to the classic narrative pattern, in which the human resources professional becomes the hero. This prescriptive narrative, based on the quest for balance between resources and jobs, features trials, resolutions, and a final moral reconciling economic performance and social development. More than just a set of instructions, GPEC appears as an initiatory, performative, and formative narrative, contributing to the identity construction of the HR professional. The article thus invites us to think of management tools as performative texts that produce meaning and organizational reality.
