Abstract

This research highlights the crucial importance of the land dimension in analyzing the entrepreneurial profiles of farmers, particularly in the potato sector in Algeria. Land access, often informal, proves to be a major challenge. The results reveal a significant prevalence of land rental practices and informal arrangements. Two types of farmers stand out: landowners and tenants, the latter subdivided into "pure" tenants and tenant-landowners. Each type adopts distinct strategies in terms of relationships with institutions, downstream actors, and the management of rental relationships. Despite reforms aimed at reassuring farmers in Algeria, access to land is becoming increasingly difficult. Entrepreneurs attracted to this precariousness show a propensity for risks, taking advantage of the flexibility of informal contracts.
