Abstract

Against the backdrop of mounting global challenges, innovation is not necessarily a positive contribution to society: it can be a danger, encourage excessive resource consumption, pollute the environment or be unsustainable and unviable over the long term.For firms, the challenge consists in stimulating the creative capacity of their teams to achieve innovation in a sustainable manner. In this paper, we conduct a qualitative study of three cases of technological companies that aspire to do more than just making profit. We find that the ultimate objective for a sustainable business is to develop intelligent solutions that address global issues. Two mechanisms are identified in this research: consistent stakeholder management on the organizational level and an organizational setting that fosters individual psychological safety, creating confidence between the individual and their idea of a positive impact for society.
