Abstract

The ethical issues related to AI have resulted in many texts and recommendations to regulate its design and use. In its « AI act » project, the European Union places the responsibility and burden of regulation on organizations and "AI makers". In this context, management sciences and IS in particular have an important role to play in understanding how organizations can implement ethical principles. Our research is in line with this perspective by focusing on engineers : how do ethical issues arise and materialize for these professional actors on the front line of its design and deployment ? Based on a series of interviews, and by mobilizing the sociological concept of professionality, the aim is to identify the ethical issues present in the discourse of these professionals and to understand the factors that facilitate or, on the contrary, limit the appropriation and the concretization of ethical principles. The results highlight a deeply rooted technosolutionism that hinders the rise of ethics as a competence in the professionality of AI engineers.
