Why is eco-design lacking impact? Comprehensive analysis of an eco-design tool

Abstract

Since the 1990s, eco-design, which initially focused on tools based on life cycle assessment (LCA), has become a key public policy issue. While management science research on eco-design has evolved to incorporate issues of strategic alignment, corporate practices remain limited, often resulting in marginal eco-innovations. However, these developments have led to the emergence of new professional roles, tools, and activities, which have been transformed by eco-design practices. Drawing on the literature on professionalization, this study sheds light on the role of the expert in the distribution of jurisdictions for these emerging activities and its impact on the deployment of eco-design practices in firms. Based on a two-year longitudinal case study following an environmental expert in the development and use of a tool designed to deploy eco-design, the article shows how expertise can freeze the professionalization of eco-design and, in doing so, condition the adoption of associated tools.
