Abstract

This study assesses the impact of contract farming on rice production conditions and yields in Burkina Faso. It is based on data collected from 1,221 producers in the Boucle du Mouhoun, Cascades, and Hauts-Bassins regions, and uses the propensity score matching method. The results show that contract farming is associated with better access to inputs, including fertilizer, seeds, and credit. This access to inputs led to an increase cultivated areas at the expense of yields. The results also show that contract farming increases rice farmers' incomes, particularly through better market access. These findings highlight the need to integrate sustainable land management measures into agricultural contracts to improve productivity while ensuring the environmental sustainability of farms.
