Abstract

2023 was very much a growth year for the banana in Europe. The supply to the EU27 was up by 2.3 %, after a big drop in 2022 (- 3.5 %) and stagnation in 2021 (- 0.2 %). In 2023 the European market 2023 consumed some 5.7 million tonnes of bananas, up by 127 000 tonnes. Since Brexit, i.e. maintaining a constant scope (EU27), this is the first upturn in consumption since 2020.
