Abstract

Has the banana sector found its limitations? This has been the collective feeling over recent years in any event, with the sector pushing its boundaries. And it is a legitimate question due to factors both outside and inside the sector. Not that the banana is going to vanish from one day to the next, as the prophets of doom would have it, bewailing the spectre of TR4. The phenomenon could be more muted and diffuse. Yes, there are diseases and pests, but besides them logistics, climate change, demands from consumers and distributors and stacks of certification all seem able to constrain or even reduce access to the resource. Taking at times a prospective viewpoint, FruiTrop offers this detailed review of the framework of constraints on the banana industry.
