Abstract

After more than a decade of uninterrupted growth, the organic products sector is in the eye of the storm. Besides the economic crisis in 2022, with record inflation in organic product consumer countries, organic certification is facing more philosophical issues, as well as "responsible" alternatives present on the market, which is contributing to fuelling disengagement by some consumers, especially in Europe. The organic banana, protected until 2021 by its dual positioning in both the premium banana segment and the entrylevel organic fruit segment, did not manage to dodge the crisis. Although the results are less alarming than for other organic products, they are in the red for the first time.
