Abstract

The United Kingdom was the first European country to import bananas, back in the 1880s from the Canaries, and then from islands in the British Empire (Jamaica and the Windward Islands). During the Second World War, the banana disappeared from shelves, with commercial ships requisitioned for military purposes,, and its absence made it a symbol of the hardships and voluntary sacrifices. It made its comeback in the 1950s, very quickly becoming a strategic product for the distribution sector. Thereafter, its consumption made very rapid progress, making the United Kingdom the number two European market in terms of volumes.
