Abstract

While there was unfortunately no long-awaited return to normal after the pandemic in 2021, some trends which took shape in 2020 have continued or even been exacerbated. In the USA, organic banana consumption boomed in 2020, and growth continued, with a dynamic which still seems very decent. In Europe, while growth in consumption is still in place, it has become very modest, with a historically low tempo. Furthermore, disparities in consumption between European countries seem to be magnifying: some big markets retained good vitality in 2021, stimulated by low price strategies, while in some historic consumer countries, the market was stagnant. In particular, this appears to result from the consolidation of some consumption trends triggered by the arrival of Covid in 2020.
