Abstract

Informal interactions represent an important organizational issue because of their positive influence on cooperation and innovation. Several research attempted to understand how these interactions emerge in an organization, sometimes by considering tangible elements of space related to the configuration of places, sometimes by focusing on factors related to regular social practice. Our present research proposes to put the different theories – especially the social affordance one – to the test of a place that quickly became a major spot for informal interactions, whereas it was not initially conceived as such. Our results confirm that informal interactions are favored by both spatial and social elements, but also that a too strong managerial designation can become an obstacle to their development. Besides, they show that informal interactions must emanate from a voluntary and spontaneous approach by individuals.
