Abstract

AgileSchool is a Business School that is devoted to pedagogical excellence, and that has grown significantly over the last decade. Its old, manual approach to class scheduling is no longer scalable. AgileSchool's educational approach is different from many other schools yet - in combination with human cognitive limitations - this causes the scheduling officers to struggle to get all classes scheduled, and the schedules they come up with are suboptimal; thereby threatening the goal of pedagogical excellence. The school can either change its educational approach or automate class scheduling. Three professors embark on an automation journey. The case describes the specifics of AgileSchool's educational approach, and the reason why scheduling officers are struggling. The case also lays out the automation project, including the development of the complex scheduling engine and the challenges faced when collecting the data input for the engine, such as the time slots during which professors are available for teaching.
