Abstract

This study takes a critical look at the use of WhatsApp groups in Congolese academia. It clearly attempts to elucidate whether Congolese students are leveraging this application in their academic pursuits. To address this concern, the study draws on a corpus of interactions exchanged by second-year undergraduate students in business management at the University of Kinshasa. Following the analysis of the dataset, the study concludes that the exploitation of WhatsApp's added value remains minimal in Congolese academia. To achieve this, the study recommends a more targeted use of WhatsApp as a platform for educational exchange, with more structured interactions between students and teachers, better still, where activities related to students' academic training would be at the center of its use. Thus, in this way, WhatsApp could serve to improve Congolese higher education, particularly by facilitating the continuity of distance learning courses.
