Abstract

Barbie est un des films les plus vus de l'histoire du cinéma et certainement un des plus lucratifs : un succès commercial exceptionnel pour un film réalisé par une femme féministe Greta Gerwig. La question relève plutôt de son contenu féministe qui, lui, peine à convaincre. Co-financé par Mattel, qui produit sa propre critique rose bonbon de son produit phare et encouragé par un marketing faramineux, le film illustre parfaitement les outrances du capitalisme néolibéral contemporain. Les représentations des femmes et des hommes y sont exagérément stéréotypées et caricaturales et la dimension de la violence physique y est clairement éludée. Toutefois, une fois ces critiques établies, cette production peut aussi être vue comme une initiation habile aux questions féministes, ou à d'autres notions comme le patriarcat, les rôles sexués ou la masculinité hégémonique. Alors, Barbie est-il un film féministe ?
