Abstract

This communication analyzes the organizational tensions arising from the implementation of a Sustainable Development and Social Responsibility (SD&SR) approach in a French university. Drawing on the theory of organizational paradoxes (Smith & Lewis, 2011), it argues that these tensions should not be seen as resistances to overcome, but rather as inherent paradoxes of institutional transformation. The empirical analysis identifies four major paradoxes: Academic freedom vs regulatory compliance (organizing paradox), Institutional innovation vs organizational inertia (learning paradox), Academic culture vs managerial rationalization (belonging paradox), and Ambition vs resources (performing paradox). These paradoxes reflect structural contradictions between professional, managerial, and societal logics. Recognizing them is essential to envisioning a sustainable transformation of the university—one that is more reflective and better attuned to the complexity of its internal dynamics.
