Abstract

The aim of this paper is to assess the production costs associated with reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing cultivated biodiversity. Five classes of farms environmental performance are constructed using greenhouse gas emissions per unit of agricultural land as a criterion, along with five performance classes based on a crop diversity index. A generalized propensity score model is applied to an unbalanced panel of 2,463 observations from 1,898 conventional dairy farms in the region of Bretagne between 2020 and 2022. The authors results show that the production costs induced by better environmental performance based on greenhouse gas emissions increase with the performance classes, while improved performance in terms of cultivated biodiversity does not affect production costs.
