Abstract

North African Mediterranean cities are rich in urban history, formed by the particular planning patterns of each civilisation that thrived there, resulting in a remarkable mosaic of urban layers marked by urban and social discontinuity and fragmentation. Our research in the Algerian city of Béjaïa demonstrates that the distribution of crime is related to the city's spatial organisation. This study uses space syntax techniques to examine the relationship between city spatial arrangement and crime, with a focus on spatial accessibility and readability. The findings emphasise the significance of the geographical structure produced by the succession of municipal policies in the distribution of crime.
