Abstract

The services provided by natural ecosystems to human societies include the absorption of our waste (CO 2 , grey water, etc.), natural resources (wood, oil, metals, etc.), vital services (air, water, biodiversity, etc.) and amenities (the beauty of natural landscapes, etc.). As these resources are neither unlimited nor evenly distributed across the planet, they are the subject of trade and conflict between human societies, within which ecological inequalities are increasing to the benefit of the most powerful. At the heart of the new growth models, digital information and communication technologies (DICTs) seemed capable of reversing this trend. This article shows that nothing is less certain, as the ecological ills linked to the spread of these technologies may, on the contrary, exacerbate ecological inequalities.
