Abstract

Nankai Grill is a successful Japanese family business in the restaurant trade with over 70 years of history. This teaching case narrates the company's founding by the father, followed by its inheritance by the daughter and, subsequently, the granddaughter. The case provides students with insights into the intricate intergenerational succession process and the challenges faced by women involved in Japanese family businesses. It also explores family dynamics and addresses key questions, such as how an heiress, often viewed as "the little girl", can establish legitimacy and leadership.
