Abstract

While there are still many questions about the integration of Web 2.0 technologies in organisations, the industrial sector and public authorities are already considering the new Web 3.0 technologies. Among these technologies, immersive virtual reality and metaverse related technologies are very promising. However, they emerge within a context of significant attention to human, environmental and social issues. In this context, we introduce a research program that aims to bring forth ideas for the renewal of the industry. This program revolves around the use of immersive virtual reality and the metaverse technologies. First, we describe our conception of nowadays' problem regarding the future of the industry. Then, we introduce an analytical framework to think about the renewal of the industry, comprising of three movements, namely knowledge extraction, knowledge sharing and the collective ideation for the future of the industry. Based on this framework, we present a revue of literature that explains the promises of immersive virtual reality and the metaverse technologies, before pointing the limits of the existing research. We then introduce our research program that begins with the study of individual behaviors of immerged individuals, and justify the program with respect to the question of the future of the industry.
