Abstract

Ethics has become a must for multinational companies which are increasingly dedicating tools to this subject however its contours remain too poorly defined. We explore the nature and functions of ethical tools (code of conduct, values and training), through a multiple case study of 19 multinationals including 30 interviews and secondary data analysed on Nvivo (Gioia, 2021). To be effective and virtuously guide employee behaviour, these ethical tools must be seen as management instruments, articulated in highly formalised, internationally uniform multi-instrument ethical arrangements. A poorly formalised ethics system is more likely to serve the purpose of anticipating and managing legal or image risks, rather than guiding behaviour in a more ethical direction.
