Abstract

In response to the public finance crisis, crowdfunding dedicated to heritage preservation has developed as a complementary mode of financing to traditional funding sources. To promote its success, our research investigates how to encourage contributions. Relying on the socio-economic approach to proximities, enriched by the anthropological concept of heritage emotion and the multidisciplinary concept of identity, a qualitative study through an online questionnaire was conducted with contributors on the platform fondation-patrimoine.org. Our findings reveal the complexity of motivations behind each contribution, as well as the dynamics of proximities, geographical, cognitive, relational, and particularly affective, in the decision to contribute to heritage crowdfunding. A better understanding of these proximities appears to be an asset for project carriers to maintain, strengthen, activate, or reawaken these links that influence the decision to contribute. Recommendations are made to improve the effectiveness of campaigns.
