Abstract

The chapter by Assen Slim explores the postsocialist transition in Eastern Europe (1989-2017), divided into two main approaches. The teleological approach, adopted by liberal economists, advocates for a rapid transition to a market economy through simultaneous and radical reforms, but encountered high social costs and unexpected results, such as persistent inflation and prolonged recession. In contrast, the genetic approach considers the constraints inherited from the past, viewing change as a slow and complex process requiring appropriate institutional reforms. Evolutionary and institutionalist theories emphasize the importance of institutions in the success of economic transformation. The conclusion highlights the necessity of minimal social consensus and compatibility with inherited institutional elements to ensure the viability of reforms.
