Menos tentados que los ricos: la aversión (no tan) soprendente de los hogares pobres por la inversión extranjera

Abstract

En tiempos en que los inversionistas profesionales corren al alero de los bonos gubernamentales, parece justificada la conducta de hogares que evitaban activos de alto riesgo incluso en momentos de bonanza de mercado. Pero, curiosamente, los que siempre preferían las aguas calmas de los bonos y de las cuentas de ahorro, en vez de los agitados mares de la alta rentabilidad, tienden a ser más pobres y menos educados que esos navegantes osados, quienes recientemente han comenzado a encallar. De hecho, esta relación positiva entre ingresos y nivel educativo, por una parte, y participación en mercados financieros sofisticados, por otra, es ampliamente conocida tanto en EE UU como en Europa (1). Lo que no sabíamos era si los hogares más pobres son también más aversos a enviar fuera su dinero, para invertir en activos extranjeros.
