Developing a Scale to Measure Kindness in the Workplace Based on Empathy, Inclusivity, and Recognition of Effort

Abstract

The present research, centered around the tenets of data percolation methodology and the Churchill paradigm, aimed to create and validate a scale tailored to measure the construct of kindness in the workplace (KIW), extending beyond simply quantifying acts randomly. We undertook a comprehensive literature review, coupled with expert discussions, to decide on the elements that determine KIW. We then collected the feedback from a diverse group of professionals to test the proposed, emerging model. The result is a multidimensional instrument that captures the three core components of KIW: empathy, inclusivity, and recognition of effort. This tool enhances the existing theoretical discourse on positive workplace behaviors and provides organizations with a metric to evaluate human performance, laying the foundation for custom interventions, and cross-cultural comparisons and industry benchmarks.
