Abstract

Migration scholars from different disciplines have highlighted the migration-facilitating role of networks. They have in particular acknowledged their importance for reducing economic, social, and psychological costs for migrant candidates in origin countries and newly arrived migrants in destination countries, and their role in reducing selectivity and perpetuating migration. In the meantime, they have also emphasised the potential downside of migratory social capital. Ethnically-dominated networks may, for example, confine immigrants to low-prestige occupations or undermine individual economic initiatives by imposing social obligations and excessive demands to support family and community members at home. Based on the recent migration literature, this chapter explores the extent to which migrant networks can be structures of both constraints and opportunities, and the implications this can have on migrants' emancipation and empowerment.
