Abstract

Research-creation aims at the complementary development of a work of art and an academic reflection. We take as our starting point the case of a research theatre that led to the play E ainda asim se levantar, in which one of the authors is both a researcher in social sciences and humanities and was also the director. The play set out in search of the forces of life when an accumulation of unsustainable pressures collide in contemporary Brazil. Here, research-creation presents itself as an alternative way of doing research, involving experience, embodiments, affects and percepts as a counterpart to conceptual thinking. It is not about staging research, but about thinking in the act (Manning & Massumi, 2018). No one claims to know what needs to be done, but artists and academics, with equal legitimacy and dignity, seek and attempt (physical and thought) gestures together.
