Les impacts quantitatifs verticaux de l’investissement direct étranger d’exportation-plateforme : le cas des industries sous-traitantes du Vietnam

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to underline the inter-industrial impacts of export-platform FDI (EPFDI) on backward linkages. In a three-country model, we show that net impact will be positive whenever competition effect is dominated by demand creation one and vice versa. In the case of Vietnamese supporting industries between 2000 and 2007, EPFDI is assimilated to export FDI. The estimates show the presence of a 100% crowding-out effect. This means EPFDI location in this country leads to a decline in domestic production. This decrease in demand of inputs is offset by an increase in inputs demand created by foreign production. This result implies that the Vietnamese industrial policy could encourage the development of innovative capacity of domestic suppliers, the transfer of technology from multinationals to local suppliers or creating clusters around foreign firms.
