Abstract

The approach we present in this article aims to show how patents can be used as input in the open innovation process. As far as we know, using patent as input in the innovation process has not been extensively studied, or at least is not enough presented in the literature. Using a qualitative approach based on a case study, the present study shows that this reverse use of patents provides the open innovation process with interesting information and knowledge which play an important role to foster innovation within the design offices. Furthermore, the analysis of the case study and its confrontation with the conceptual framework show that patent is seen as a multifaceted instrument in the service of practitioners.
