Abstract

After an initial phase in which Franco-Vietnamese relations acquired an increasingly European dimension, 1976 constituted a watershed. In the wake of Việt Nam's reunification, a series of trade issues came to the agenda of the European Community. French diplomacy duly mobilized to secure conditions favorable to Việt Nam's access to the European market. This moment—when consensus within the Community briefly eclipsed internal cleavages—proved pivotal, laying the foundations for a durable Euro-Vietnamese relationship that endured into the 1990s. During the subsequent Đổi Mới reform era, France once again assumed a decisive, Việt Nam-friendly role, most notably by leveraging its influence within international financial and monetary bodies. This intervention was critical to consolidating the renewal of the Socialist Republic of Việt Nam and epitomizes the enduring bonds that anchor the partnership between Paris and Hà Nội.
