Abstract

La franchise emploie plus de 300 000 personnes en France, près de 8 millions aux États-Unis. Elle est une des formes d'activité majeure dans des secteurs comme l'hôtellerie, la restauration rapide, les services à la personne, ou encore le commerce. Apparue aux États-Unis à la fin du XIXe siècle, elle prend, en France, sa forme moderne en 1923 lors de la création des magasins Pingouin, lancés par Jean Prouvost, patron de la Lainière de Roubaix.
