Abstract

La rivalité historique entre ces deux hauts lieux, sentinelles respectives des régions normande et bretonne, fut tant spirituelle que politique. Les auteurs, après une enquête archéologique et une analyse critique des sources anciennes, démontent une idée développée au XVIIIe siècle : la présence d'un mithraeum au sommet du Mont-Dol. Mais si la présence d'un culte dédié au dieu perse n'a pu être démontrée, il n'en demeure pas moins que le Mont-Dol fut un haut lieu de la spiritualité, avant une récupération par les promoteurs du sanctuaire du Mont-Saint-Michel, Pippinides puis Carolingiens, dont les motivations furent spirituelles et politiques. L'analogie avec le dieu perse Mithra n'est cependant pas abandonnée, et les auteurs abordent la récupération de son culte par le christianisme en la personne de l'archange Michel, dieu des armées et des frontières, notamment chez les Carolingiens.
