Abstract

Face aux difficultés de se procurer de l'argent par le crédit, le Comptoir central de crédit fondé par Victor-Corentin Bonnard (1804-1869) à Paris en 1853 propose aux professionnels des bons d'échange (ou billets de crédit) leur permettant d'acquérir la marchandise de leur choix en échange d'un engagement réciproque sur les fruits de leur propre travail. Il fournit ainsi à ses clients deux avantages, une marchandise acquise sans payer et la promesse d'un débouché, autrement dit un pouvoir d'achat avant même d'avoir vendu. Le succès est au rendez-vous, mais n'est pas durable : le Comptoir finit par être encombré par des bons sur des marchandises dont personne ne veut ! Bonnard est contraint à la démission en 1862, mais le Comptoir, géré par son gendre, Eugène Naud qui apporte les quelques correctifs nécessaires.
