Abstract

The use of ICTs, as practiced today, poses serious ecological problems. But are users aware of the effects of their own use on the environment? How do they experience the contradictions between their attitudes and behaviors? After a review of the literature linking ICTs to ecology, the second part presents neutralization theory and the ambivalence model. The following two parts then successively present the methodology of a qualitative study based on twelve in-depth interviews, followed by the results of the analysis of users' different strategies for reducing their cognitive dissonance, both in their general ecological behaviors and in their specific ICT consumption behaviors. Finally, a discussion and a review of the literature provide theoretical and practical lessons for increasing user accountability.
