Abstract

Pour la première fois dans l'histoire, au printemps 2020, le prix du pétrole brut américain, mesuré par le West Texas Intermediate (WTI), est devenu négatif pour atteindre jusqu'à – 40 dollars le 20 avril, en raison du brusque ralentissement de l'économie mondiale pour limiter la propagation du Covid-19. De façon inédite, l'offre excédentaire de pétrole a contraint les producteurs à payer les acheteurs pour des barils qu'ils n'étaient plus en mesure de stocker.
