La economía del pánico. Cómo enfrentar las crisis financieras

Abstract

Desde el inicio de los años noventa, en la rígida geografía de la economía capitalista ha surgido un tipo de interacción inédita entre su centro, rico y poderoso, y su periferia, dominada y frágil. En esta nueva fase de la globalización, la liberalización financiera en las nacientes "economías emergentes" se produjo con mucha rapidez y poca prudencia. Sus riesgos fueron percibidos de manera tardía y progresiva a partir de un ciclo de crisis: México en 1994, Sudeste Asiático y Corea en 1997, Rusia en 1998, Brasil en 1999, Turquía en 2000 y Argentina en 2002. Jérôme Sgard desentraña las dinámicas de cada uno de estos destructivos y contagiosos episodios. En esta economía del pánico no solo las instituciones públicas nacionales quedaron paralizadas, sino también los organismos multilaterales. ¿Por qué fallaron las estrategias del FMI? El autor compara los métodos de gestión de las crisis y remite su análisis a dos instituciones públicas fundamentales de la economía de mercado y del capitalismo: la moneda y los derechos de propiedad. Con las herramientas clásicas de la economía y la política económica liberales y fundado en encuestas realizadas en los países afectados, este libro abre un camino en la realidad mal conocida y confusa de las crisis en el mundo globalizado. Su actualizado estudio sobre la exitosa experiencia cambiaria brasileña y la pesificación argentina resultará especialmente interesante para los lectores latinoamericanos.
