Abstract

Les deux ouvrages publiés en 2001 et 2002 par l'historien britannique Martin Daunton, professeur d'histoire économique et sociale à l'université de Cambridge, proposent une présentation dense, intelligente et complexe d'un sujet aride et néanmoins fondamental pour la compréhension de l'histoire politique, sociale et économique de la Grande-Bretagne, celui du rôle de l'impôt et de la politique fiscale au cours des XIXe et XXe siècles. Le premier volume embrasse la période 1799-1914 et s'interroge sur la construction de la légitimité de l'impôt dans la société victorienne puis edwardienne.
