Abstract

Le PIB britannique a augmenté de 0,7 % au premier trimestre 2004 et de 0,9 % au deuxième trimestre, affichant alors une hausse de 3,7 % en glissement sur un an. L'économie a donc connu une croissance un peu plus rapide que son taux de croissance tendanciel, estimé à 2,75 % par le gouvernement. Le premier élément marquant du premier semestre 2004 est l'amélioration continue du climat conjoncturel, particulièrement visible dans l'industrie manufacturière. Le deuxième est la remontée progressive des taux directeurs de la Banque d'Angleterre. Les signes d'un tassement de l'activité ont commencé à se manifester à la fin du troisième trimestre. À la fin septembre, la question est de savoir si l'économie ne ralentira que modérément, comme le souhaitent les autorités monétaires, ou si le spectre d'une baisse brutale des prix de l'immobilier qui hante les perspectives de croissance depuis plusieurs années finira par se matérialiser.
