Abstract

Le 1er août 2007, dans le Wall Street Journal, 1 028 économistes américains appelaient le Congrès des États-Unis à résister à la tentation du protectionnisme commercial, notamment à l'égard de la Chine. Les signataires de la pétition se réclamaient de celle du 4 mai 1930, aux termes de laquelle 1 028 économistes américains avaient exhorté dans le New York Times le Congrès et le président Hoover à rejeter le Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act, qui allait ajouter à la crise de 1929 les effets néfastes d'une guerre commerciale dont le monde ne sortirait, graduellement, que dans l'après-guerre.
